On 15 November 1939, Ettel volunteered for military service in the the Luftwaffe. Following training courses, he attended blind flying school in January 1941 and passed his A/B pilot license at Prenzlau. He then attended a fighter pilot training school in Paris. Finally on 10 April 1942, Lt. Ettel was posted to 4./JG 3 "Udet". He would fly his last mission in the Mediterranean theatre, being shod down and killed on 17 July 1943, as his III. Gruppe was tasked with flying ground support missions against British forces in the vicinity of Catania and the Gruppe lost five of ten dispatched fighters to anti-aircraft fire. His Bf 109 G-6crashed northeast of Lago di Lentini and he was buried at the German cemetery at Motta Saint`Anastasia in an unmarked grave. Wolf-Udo Ettel was posthumously awarded the Eichenlaub on 31 August 1943 Credited with more than 250 combat missions and 124 confirmed victories. Please note that
