Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6/R6 trop

Participate in the Mediterranean area from from the start of 1943 based at Tunisia the II./JG 77 was on 7 May 1943 evacuated and transferred to Trapani on Sicily for a well deserved rest and refit. As a consequence the Gruppe was unable to file any claims during May.

During June just a meager four abschusse was added to the 1607 confirmed victories of the Gruppe, all for an own loss of five, two of then in air-combat with both its plots listed as MIA. With another eight Machine damaged or lost due to pilot error and mechanical problems. One of the filed damaged Bf 109 G-6s during this period was the Bf 109 G-6 was the "Yellow 5" that Oblt. Joachim Deicke made force landing in his at Poggio-Renatico, in Norten Italy on 22 June, his machine receiving 20% damage.

During the month of July the number of mission increased, especily after the Allied Invasion of Sicily, dubbed "Husky" commenced on the night of 9-10 July. This month ended up with another 39 victories, 18 Allied fighters and 21 bombers, most of them USAAF 4-engine bombers, all for known loss of 37 machines, 15 due to air-combat, with six pilots KIA and another four MIA. One of the losses during this period was Deicke´s "Gelb 1" that was blown up by own troops during the retreat at the Trapani Base on 13 July, four days before the Allied had secure the island.

During September the II./JG 77 lost 11 Me 109s and with another 34 shipped off to other units. This left the unit with just one remaining Bf 109 G-6. The problem was soon resolved however, with the surrender of the Italians to the Allies. Alerted, the prepared Germans moved in and disarmed the Italians and ordered the Regia Aeronautica, the Royal Italian Air Force, to hand over their equipment to the Luftwaffe.

As the Gruppe could not expect to be equipped with the Messerschmitt fighter, the order was issued on 10 September for II./JG 77 to move to Isola San Antoino close to Padua. Here they was to be re-equiped with confiscated Macchi MC.205.

Flying this machine in June 1943 was the Staffelkapitän of 6./JG 77, Oberleutnant Joachim Deicke, not know as a high scoring "Experten" rather one of the trusty "Old Hares" is however know known to have amassed total of 18 confirmed victories as a Jagdwaffe pilot. He ended the war as the Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG 77 surviving a total of 661 combat missions.
