Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6

White 12, W.Nr. 260XX, flown by Feldwebel Kurt Gräf, 7./JG 3, Wörishofen/Germany, 14 October 1943

This spectacular painted Messerschmitt produced Bf 109 G-6 was flown by one of the "Old Hares" of JG 3, Kurt Gräf. He joined the Geschwader in 1940, claiming his first two over France, on 14 May 1940, both Hawk-75As downed northwest of Dinant.

Then followed a Spitfire shot down North of Calais on 21 August. He continued to score over Britain, a Spitfire over Canterbury on 26 August and his fifth another Spitfire two days later, claimed over London.

His first known VVS machine claimed was a LaGG-3 downed South of Bagatoje on 5 July, 1943. Gräf would add another five confirmed victories in the East, the last one, an Il-2 "Cement bomber" was shot downed on 31 July, 1943.

Posted back to Germany and Reichferteidigung (Home defence) duties he would add two B-17 USAAF Flying Fortress in the Strassburg area on 6 September, 1943. He would add another five US 4-engine bombers, the last one, his 18th Abschusse fell before his guns on 23 February 1944.

Two days later, on 15 February Oberfledwebel Kurt Gräf would be killed in an accident flying another G-6 with the W.Nr. 27111, crashing at Vellberg, near Schwäbisch Hall, probably due to high altitude sickness. A postumusly Deutsches Kreuz in Gold would follow his death.

This profile would be included in my next Luftwaffe fighter Book, Profile book No 15. During the week I have produced an additional 11 profiles of German fighters.

By doing that I was able to determine what profiles that I should include in the following three volumes, Profile Book No 15, 16 and 17.

After making some reshuffle between the three upcoming books, I have manage to get an even mix of aircraft types, their pilots and Geschwaders.

That is to say when it comes to Profile Book No 15, the reader would find, Three Bf 109 A and B:s, 17 Bf 109 Emils, 27 Bf 109 Fs, 23 Bf 109 Gs, and another 13 late war Bf 109 Gs including K-4s. When it comes to the Focke Wulfs: 30 Fw 190 A-1 to A-8 would be included and seven Fw 190 Doras, another two late war Fw 190 prototypes, one He 162, and another Me 163, This together with a Macchi 202 flown by Marseille. Finally, four Me 262 and a captured P-51B Mustang is included.

So it would not be any more guesswork in what profile book newly made profiles should be included in. That is to say, the following fighter profiles made would henceforth be included in Luftwaffe Fighters, Profile Book No 18.
