1940 U.S. Navy Lt. John Smith "Jimmy" Thach, VF-3,
USS Saratoga CV-3, 19 March 1940.
On
landing he tipped this Buffalo (BuNo 1393) onto its nose on the
flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga [CV-3). Ensign
Edward Butch O'Hare, another future USN ace also flew this aircraft
several times during the summer and fall of 1940.
