Vought F4U Corsair

F4U-1D Sally, Turtle Bay/Espiritu Santos/New Hebrides, early 1944
This mystery Corsair, was completely the creation of the industrious and resourceful Marines, built by personal from scrap and spare parts by Service Squadron Eleven (SS-11). She carried no guns, arresting hook, catapult hooks or ammunition pans. Painted overall in G Aluminium (FS17178) with black markings. Later in 1944 the machine was camouflage in deep sea blue and was marked with the numbers 894 to represent a fictitious Bureau Number and was thereafter flown on reconnaissance flights.

Note that this is one of the profiles made for the new Pacific Fighter Book that was not included in the finished product.
