Focke Wulf Fw 190 A-4/U7

Yellow 9, flown by Leutnant Friedrich Fleischmann, 9./JG 2, Vannes-Marsan/France, April 1943

The two color photos used making this profile, note the yellow tint, typical for the Agfa film original.

I'm still amazed over the number of profile subjects to be found out there, often flown by known pilots. One example is this profile of a Fw 190 A-4 that I found on the net, posted there by the pilots grandson.

This profile is based firstly on the two color photos but also on other A-4 machines from III./JG 2 that reveal similar camouflage. One example it the Fw 190 A-4 with the Werknummern 746, the well photographed "Gelbe 4" of Oblt. Siegfried Schnell.

Based on the known Werknummern and its distinctive camouflage pattern, these A-4 aircraft were manufactured by Focke-Wulf Marienburg in Bremen between June 1942 and January 1943. It is thus most probable that this "Gelbe 9" was from the W.Nr. range from 0140 561 to 0140 810, including some 250 machines.

Regarding the pilot its known that Lt. Fleischmann filed a claim for a B-17 on 4 July 1943 (however it was not confirmed by the RLM). He was to be seriously wounded following crash in his Fw 190 A-5 at Vannes on 15 July 1943 due to engine failure.

Due to his wounds he was never to return to active duty but was promoted to Oberleutnant on 1 June 1944. Note that this machine was one of the U7 "Höhenleistung" subtype, enable the Fw 190 A-4 better preformance at hight, better suited for attacking the USAAF four-engine bombers.

This was one of seven new profiles made during this week, most of them would be published in my upcoming Profile Book No 18.
