Sigfried Schnell participated
in the Operation Donnerkei during 11-13 February 1942, the protection
of three German capital ships. However with a total of 56 abschusse
under his belt he was not able to add any victories util 3 June
1942, this day he managed to amassed four Spitfires within a
space of nine minutes. Another five Spitfire was claimed by him
during this month.
And on 19 August flying over the beaches during the Dieppe Raid,
he would reach his 70th, when five more Spitfires was claimed
over Tréport, Secquevill and Dieppe, making hime "Ace-in-a-day"
for a second time. On 1 February Schnell was promoted to Hauptmann
follows.
Theareafter after adding another two USAAF B-17 Bombers southwest
of Sait-Nazaire on 3 January 1943 he was on 1 May appointed as
the new Gruppenkommander of III./JG 54 in the "Defense of
the Reich " Over Germany he would add another twelve allied
aircraft, including six B-17, three Typhoons, two Spitfires and
a P-47 Thunderbolt, reaching a total of 87 confirmed victories.
Finally on 1 February 1944, he was given command of IV. Gruppe
of JG 54, based near Leningrad area, arriving to the East on
11 February. He replaced Hauptmann Rudolf Sinner. This command
transfers between fronts were rare, given the markedly different
combat conditions, and unfortunately Schnell was not lucky to
be able to adapt quickly enough.
After less than a month and three further aerial victories over
VVS flown machines, he was shot down and killed in his Bf 109
G-6 over Narva on 25 February 1944. Posthumously, he was promoted
to Major, accredited with a total of 93 abschusse claimed in
an unknown number combat missions.
Please note that this
profile is the right-hand side of my older left hand side profile
published earlier in profile book No 3, as profile No 50. One
of a few handfull of profile subjects I have found photos of
depicting both sides.
This was one of
nine new profiles made during this week, most of them would be
published in my upcoming Profile Book No 18.
