The Geschwaderstab, I. and III./JG 2 converted to the Dora-9 over the short span of just two weeks, receiving a total of 107 aircraft between mid-December 1944 up to the end of the year. From loss reports researchers know that the machines delivered during this period were sourced from three different Focke Wulf plants: Weser Flugzeugbau GmbH ("WFG"; 400xxx W.Nr. series), Mitteldeutsche Metalwerke ("MME"; 500xxx W.Nr. series), and Gerhard Fieseler Werke ("GFW"; 600xxx W.Nr. series). From 9 March 1945 the JG 2 bases situated around Frankfurt was well suited for the operation against the Remagen bridgehead that was by this time was formed and widened. During this time the I. Gruppe flew a number of Jabo missions armed with 250 kg bombs in an effort to destroy the Ludendorff Bridge from the air and halt the 9th US Armored Division's breakout. It was probably during these events that "Black 2" on this day, 9 March 1945 was reported to have substain 10% damaged or had mechanical problems at the Fürstenau base, damages that resulted in it being declared unserviceable and was left behind, plundered of parts. And then, late March JG 2 abandoned the airfields around Frankfurt and retreated into Czechoslovakia. By this time JG 2 was now a depleted fighter formation and could only muster a meager 16 Fw 190 D-9s for operations. As the end of war drew nearer, without any hope of postponing the inevitable defeat, the Geschwader was redeployed from its then Rhine area location into Bavaria. This Dora is a typical GFW-produced machine with the Werknummer of 600427 it was an early produced Dora, manufactured in December 1944. Note that its power egg
cowling shows signs of a rather heavy overspray in brown and
green RLM 81/82 camouflage. The engine cowling was a sub-contracted
component and probably original finished in an unknown dark green
shade. During this week I have manage to make an additional eight aircraft profiles. This "black 2" was however made two weeks ago. This D-9 It would ofcause be included in one of my upcoming profile books. |
