North American P-51 D Mustang

WZ+L, "Sherman Was Right", sn 44-63209, flown by 1st Lieutenant Frank E. Oiler, 84 FS/78 FG,

RAF Duxford/England, 19 April 1945

Frank E. Oiler was born and grew up in Euclid a suburb located just northeast of Cleveland. After he earned his silver wings and commission as a Second Lieutenant. Lt. Oiler was shipped overseas to the European Theater of Operations. He was assigned to the 84th Fighter Squadron, 78th Fighter Group

His aircraft flown in 1945 was famously named "Sherman Was Right". This was a reference to the famous quote by Civil War General Sherman: "War is hell." Note also the distinctive black-and-white checkered nose cowlings used by the 78th Fighter Group.

This day that famously remembered in aviation history as the "Day of the Great Jet Massacre" when USAAF claimed to have shot down an astonishing 30 Jet-fighters.

Lt. Oiler was flying his 67th combat mission when he intercepted a Luftwaffe jet fighter. Lt. Oiler then successfully maneuvered his propeller-driven fighter to line up a shot and destroy the jet, earning his confirmed combat credit and contributing to the 78th Fighter Group's Distinguished Unit Citation for their relentless operations over Czechoslovakia that week.

However the eight true losses in a single afternoon was enough to crippled what was left of JG 7's operational strength in the region. The German losses this day included Major Rudolf Sinner, the Kommandeur of the III./JG 7 shot down in his Me 262 near Prague by P-51 Mustangs. He managed to bail out at low altitude but was severely wounded when being gunned by US pilots on the ground while pinned downed stuck in bob-wire.

Another losses was that of Oblt. Hans-Dieter Weihs when after his Turbin Jäger was heavily damaged in combat with Mustangs over western Czechoslovakia was forced to crash-land. Another three unnamed JG 7 pilots were officially listed as killed or missing in action the immediate vicinity of Prague-Ruzyn airfield during the afternoon American fighter sweeps.

This profile is one of many newly made P-51 Mustangs made during the last three months, more will follow soon.
