Messerschmitt Bf 109 F-4

Black 5, Flown by Oberfeldwebel Alfred "Fred" Heckmann, 5/JG 3, Tusow/USSR, 18 August 1942

The top-view of Oberfeldwebel Alfred "Fred" Heckmann´s Black 5, one of the first Bf 109 top-views made by me

On this day Obfw. Alfred Heckmann scored his 49 - 50 abschuss by downing two VVS I-16s. He would continue to score another 24 confirmed victories, the last 18 while flying in JG 26. Finally he ended up in JV 44 flying the Me 262 jet fighter as an Oberleutnant.

Please note the top view of his machine, in fact one of the first three Bf 109 made by me. As many of you already knows, I´m not perticular interested in making over- and undersides of any profile subjects, all in an effort to keep the speculatone down to a minimum, since there is wery few machines documented from top or below.

However althoug this top view is not based on any photos its based on known Bf 109 Fs camouflage patterns. I know that this profile is a one of the speculations I have hesitated to make in the past, althoug I have to confess that it was great fun to make this original.

During the week I have made six new profiles, including three top views. The side view would be included in one of my three upcoming Luftwaffe Fighter Books: No 15, No 16 or in No 17.
