Messerschmitt Bf 109 F-4

White Chevron Bar Bar, from Stab III./JG 2, Flown by Oberleutnant Egon Mayer, Théville/France, mid April 1942

April 1942 began with the continuing but increasing pressure on the Luftwaffe in France and the Low Countries as the spring weather improved. This resulted in that mid April was a "Hot period" for the JG 2 which, from 14 to 17 April claimed no less than 31 victories, 25 of them Spitfires, including 8 by the Staffelkapitän of the 7./JG 2, Oblt. Egon Mayer, all for the own loss of two pilots KIA and the loss of three Bf 109s. Of the eight claims filed by Mayer during this period five was finally accepted by the RLM, filed as his 30-34th Abschüsse. During the same period JG 26, the another channel Geschwader filed claims for an additional seven Spitfires. It interesting to note that during those days the RAF Fighter Command losses amounted to 13 Spitfires and one Hurricane, with another seven Spitfires damaged.
