Messerschmitt Bf 109 F-4 trop

Yellow 4, flown by Oberleutnant Hans Röhrig, 9./JG 53, Quotaifiya/Libya, early November 1942

Hans Röhrig left Jagdfliegerschule 4 Furth on 23 September 1940 and was first assigned to the elite 3./Erprobungsgruppe 210. In this unit he flew many fighter-bomber missions during the Battle of Britain and claimed five aerial victories, however those victories remain unconfirmed.

On 1 May 1941, Röhrig was transferred to I./JG 53 by that time stationed on the Eastern Front. A month after the invasion commenced, he recorded his first confirmed victory on 25 July, when he shot down a VVS DB-3. As the I Gruppe left the East early August Lt. Röhrig had amassed a total of four victories, the last, a BSh-1 Soviet light bomber was claimed on 3 August east of Perwomomajsk.

Then Röhrig was transferred with his 3./JG 53 to the Mediterranean theatre. And from 15 December 1941 he flew missions over Malta from the Gela base in Sicily, but was unable to add any further victory during this time.

After rest and refit the I./JG 53 was once back to the Eastern Front based at Kursk for conducting fighter support in the front area around Orel and Kursk. The first claim by Röhrig was filed on 4 June 1942, a MiG-3. After the German summer offencive commenced on 28 June he manage to add another 53 abshusse, the last filed on 25 September, two Yak-1 within 10 minutes while fighting in the Leningrad area.

However during this period he was also to end up on the receiving end while escorting JU 87 Stukas on 6 August. This day Lt. Röhrig was force to leave his Bf 109 G-2 "Yellow 8" by parachute after being shot down by a Yak-1. Apparently his advesary was flown by VVS ace Starshiy Leytenant Mikhail Baranov.

Back in Germany for a was deserved rest and refit Leutnant Hans Röhrig was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 2 October 1942. On 1 November 1942, Hptm. "Tutti" Müller was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG 53 and led his Gruppe back to the Mediterranean theater. And by November 1942 the whole JG 53 was again concentrated on Sicily for an renewed offensive against Malta.

The I./JG 53 arrived San Pietro on 1 October 1942 and 12 days later Oblt. Röhrig claimed the first victories here, both Spitfires, for his 59-60 abschusse. A month later when 9../JG 53 Staffelkapitän Oblt. Franz Götz took over as the new Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG 53 Oblt, Hans Röhrig from 3./JG 53 took over the command of the 9th Staffeln.

However during this last month in this theatre he would not add any more claims. He claimed his last victories, two USAAF P-38 Lightnings, over Sicily on 11 July 1943. Two days later, on 13 July 1943, Röhrig led 9./JG 53 escorting Ju 52s to drop paratroops on the Catania plains. He failed to return from the mission, being shot down and killed by RAF Spitfires which bounced the escort mission.

Röhrig was posthumously promoted to Hauptmann. Note this rather scabby looking Bf 109 F-4 trop, showing evidence of repair and with an out of form repainted fuselage cross. Note also the "ace of spades" Geschwader crest on the engine cowling. This aircraft left to rot after the Gruppe was reequipped with the Bf 109 G-4 trop late November early December and later capture by the British.
