Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-2

Yellow 1, W.Nr. 13531, flown by Hauptmann Hermann Graf, 9./JG 52, Pitomnik/USSR, 11 September 1942

On this day 11 September 1942 in the afternoon Hptm. Graf downed two adversaries over Stalingrad within 11 minutes, the first on was a Pe-2 Bomber from the 270 BAD and the second was A P-40 Kittyhawk from 731 IAP, thereby reaching total of 164 abschusse.

During this period flying in a hectic tempo using two Bf 109s, Graf flew in "Yellow 1" and "Yellow 11". And on 26 September, Graf took-off in "Yellow 11" with his wingman Uffz. Hermann Wolf on a "Freie Jagd" (free hunting) mission.

This was not just another sortie in the Stalingrad area; it was the mission that was intended to provide Graf with his 200th victory. Scanning the sky they spotted a formation of I-153 biplanes, and immediately attacked.

Wolf returned to Pitomnik shortly before Hermann Graf, and when he later came in for landing, he received a hero's welcome. Each pilot claimed one of the I-153s shot down; it was to be Wolf's 28th Abschuss and more importantly, Graf's 200th, the first pilot in history to achieve that number.

Battling the VVS in the Stalingrad area from 22 August to 26 September, resulted in Herrman Graf increasing his tally from 127 to 202 Kills, an astonishing 75 Abschüsse.

Although totally exhausted after the hard fighting over Stalingrad, Graf claimed another two victories before JG 52 left for the Caucasus.

Please note that a later version of this Grafs "Yellow 1" was published in Profile Book No 3, as profile No 37. This machine was photographed five days later, on 16 September and was by that time refurbished, with a fresh overpaint over its earlier rather scruffy appearance.

This profile was one of six newly made profiles this week. All of the fighters made was flown by aces, five by Luftwaffe Experten and one was flown by a Finnish Ace. This machine would be included in one of my upcoming Profile Books.
